Drafts in WHITE
First Gestures
Issue 14
April 2026
By Dana Harel
Lately, I have been sketching like a fashion designer.
Not in any literal sense.
But in the way the work begins.

In fashion, a toile is a first garment.
It is not meant to be worn.
It is a study of proportion, movement, and restraint.
I have been working around the body for many years.
Through drawing, through porcelain, through form.
And recently, through cloth and light, something shifted.
I started thinking about the idea of a toile.
A way of thinking before committing to the final form.

The new lights began to feel like that.
Sometimes, the early sketches are more evocative than the final form.
They are finished objects, but they still behave like drafts.
They remain open.
They hold onto the energy of the first gesture.
These are part of a new series, TOILE.
Two pieces are available for preview HERE.
You are always welcome to visit the studio. Let us know if you’d like to come by.
